Drone strike disrupts Dubai flights as Iran continues Gulf attacks
Could Iran be using China's BeiDou system? The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has announced diversion of some flights from the Dubai international airport, one of the world's busiest, after a drone attack sparked a fire near the facility, as Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and Saudi Arabia also reported intercepting drones and missiles. The Dubai Media Office on Monday said civil defence teams had "successfully contained the fire resulting from impact to one of the fuel tanks in the vicinity" of the airport, noting that no injuries had been reported so far. The Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, meanwhile, said it was temporarily suspending flights at the airport "as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of all passengers and staff". It did not say when they expected flights to resume.

According to Flight Aware, more than 2,300 flights entering and exiting the US today have been delayed, including over 350 at Chicago O'Hare alone. Departures at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston were delayed by 30 minutes due to strong winds, and the FAA expected those wait times to increase throughout the day.

Mystery Object From 'Space' Strikes United Airlines Flight Over Utah
Government investigators are gathering data to confirm what exactly cracked the windshield of a 737 Max aircraft at above 30,000 feet. An United Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 9 airplane, similar to the one that was struck, approaches San Diego International Airport for a landing.Photograph: Kevin Carter; Getty Images Save this storyThe National Transportation Safety Board confirmed Sunday that it is investigating an airliner that was struck by an object in its windscreen, mid-flight, over Utah. "NTSB gathering radar, weather, flight recorder data," the federal agency said on the social media site X. "Windscreen being sent to NTSB laboratories for examination." The strike occurred Thursday, during a United Airlines flight from Denver to Los Angeles. Images shared on social media showed that one of the two large windows at the front of a 737 MAX aircraft was significantly cracked. Related images also reveal a pilot's arm that has been cut multiple times by what appear to be small shards of glass.

Have India and Pakistan started a drone war?
Pakistan's military said on Thursday morning that the country's air defence system had brought down 25 Indian drones overnight over some of the country's chief cities, including Lahore and Karachi. At least one civilian has died, and five people were wounded, it said. India's Defence Ministry confirmed hours later that it had targeted Pakistan's air defence radars and claimed that it was able to "neutralize" one defence system in Lahore. It said Pakistan had attempted to attack India and Indian-administered Kashmir with drones and missiles overnight, but that these had been shot down. The drone attacks represent the latest escalation between the nuclear-armed neighbours, a day after India launched deadly missile strikes on Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, killing at least 31 people, according to Islamabad.

Drone near-misses surge at busiest US airports amid rise in unauthorized flights
Following several months of numerous high-profile aviation accidents, new data suggest pilots are facing a specific threat when it comes to keeping airline passengers safe in the skies. Last year, drones accounted for approximately two-thirds of reported near-midair collisions with commercial aircraft taking off or landing within the country's 30 busiest airports, according to the Associated Press. The findings come as aviation safety data indicate drones accounted for the highest number of near-misses since 2020, with the first reports dating back to 2014. "The rise in recreational and commercial drone use has simply outpaced education and enforcement," aviation attorney Jason Matzus told Fox News Digital. "More people are flying drones without fully understanding the rules or the risks."

Examining the Dynamics of Local and Transfer Passenger Share Patterns in Air Transportation
Zheng, Xufang, Zhang, Qilei, Cobb, Victoria, Li, Max Z.
The air transportation local share, defined as the proportion of local passengers relative to total passengers, serves as a critical metric reflecting how economic growth, carrier strategies, and market forces jointly influence demand composition. This metric is particularly useful for examining industry structure changes and large-scale disruptive events such as the COVID-19 pandemic. This research offers an in-depth analysis of local share patterns on more than 3900 Origin and Destination (O&D) pairs across the U.S. air transportation system, revealing how economic expansion, the emergence of low-cost carriers (LCCs), and strategic shifts by legacy carriers have collectively elevated local share. To efficiently identify the local share characteristics of thousands of O&Ds and to categorize the O&Ds that have the same behavior, a range of time series clustering methods were used. Evaluation using visualization, performance metrics, and case-based examination highlighted distinct patterns and trends, from magnitude-based stratification to trend-based groupings. The analysis also identified pattern commonalities within O&D pairs, suggesting that macro-level forces (e.g., economic cycles, changing demographics, or disruptions such as COVID-19) can synchronize changes between disparate markets. These insights set the stage for predictive modeling of local share, guiding airline network planning and infrastructure investments. This study combines quantitative analysis with flexible clustering to help stakeholders anticipate market shifts, optimize resource allocation strategies, and strengthen the air transportation system's resilience and competitiveness.

Holistic Reasoning with Long-Context LMs: A Benchmark for Database Operations on Massive Textual Data
Maekawa, Seiji, Iso, Hayate, Bhutani, Nikita
The rapid increase in textual information means we need more efficient methods to sift through, organize, and understand it all. While retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) models excel in accessing information from large document collections, they struggle with complex tasks that require aggregation and reasoning over information spanning across multiple documents--what we call holistic reasoning. Long-context language models (LCLMs) have great potential for managing large-scale documents, but their holistic reasoning capabilities remain unclear. In this work, we introduce HoloBench, a novel framework that brings database reasoning operations into text-based contexts, making it easier to systematically evaluate how LCLMs handle holistic reasoning across large documents. Our approach adjusts key factors such as context length, information density, distribution of information, and query complexity to evaluate LCLMs comprehensively. Our experiments show that the amount of information in the context has a bigger influence on LCLM performance than the actual context length. Furthermore, the complexity of queries affects performance more than the amount of information, particularly for different types of queries. Interestingly, queries that involve finding maximum or minimum values are easier for LCLMs and are less affected by context length, even though they pose challenges for RAG systems. However, tasks requiring the aggregation of multiple pieces of information show a noticeable drop in accuracy as context length increases. Additionally, we find that while grouping relevant information generally improves performance, the optimal positioning varies across models. Our findings surface both the advancements and the ongoing challenges in achieving a holistic understanding of long contexts.

Israel launches drones at Lebanon as fears of escalation spike
Israeli drone attacks have reportedly killed two people in southern Lebanon as conflict spirals between the bordering states. The Israeli attack was the first lethal action following a rocket attack on Saturday that Israel says killed 12 children and youths in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. The strike has increased concern that the war in Gaza threatens to escalate into a regional conflict. Lebanese state media said one strike hit a motorcycle close to the border, killing two riders and injuring a child. Two others were injured in a separate strike in southern Lebanon.
